Police release details of murder-suicide

JEFFERSON – Authorities this morning released the names of two people who died in a murder-suicide yesterday in Ashe County.

Sherry Ashley, 48, was shot twice by her boyfriend, Richard Creal Hailey, 51, who then turned the rifle on himself, said Ashe County Sheriff James Williams. The shooting happened at a home at 160 Whispering Pine Lane.

The sheriff said the couple had been together a few years and had no history of domestic violence. Hailey had been treated for mental illness, and was on medication for it, he said.

A neighbor called 911 at 2:20 p.m. yesterday after hearing several gunshots.
