CAMP LEJEUNE
North Carolina-based Marines are honoring six service members killed in Afghanistan.
The 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, will hold a memorial service at Camp Lejeune on Friday to honor the five Marines and one sailor.
The Marines spent seven months battling Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan. The Camp Lejeune unit deployed last year as part of a surge of forces to the central Asian country.
A new medical clinic at Camp Lejeune will be named in honor of a Navy Corpsman who was also killed in Afghanistan.
The U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command will dedicate the clinic to Hospital Corpsman Second Class Charles "Luke" Milam during a ceremony Friday.
The clinic is one of only two medical facilities owned and operated exclusively by the Marine Corps.
Milam was killed in 2007 in Helmand Province during an attack on a Taliban stronghold. It was his fourth combat deployment.
