CHARLOTTE
A North Carolina judge has been reprimanded by judicial officials for his remarks about prosecutors in two cases where his wife represented the defendants.
The Charlotte Observer reported Mecklenburg District Judge Timothy Smith was reprimanded Thursday by the North Carolina Judicial Standards Commission.
The newspaper said Smith was accused of sarcastically congratulating a prosecutor for wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars by jailing a drug user. In a separate case, he told another prosecutor the police officer in her case had lied in the trial.
The commission says Smith allowed his family relationship to influence his conduct.
Smith accepted the reprimand rather than face formal charges and a public disciplinary hearing.
He said he had been advised not to talk about the matter.
