RALEIGH -- A longtime member of State Board of Education, Kathy A. Taft, died yesterday from the injuries she suffered in an assault this past weekend, Raleigh police and her family said.

Detectives are now investigating the case as a homicide, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said.

Her family said in a statement issued by WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh that Taft, 62, of Greenville was attacked Saturday while staying at the Raleigh home of her boyfriend, who was in Florida at the time.

Taft joined the state school board in 1995. She ran unsuccessfully for the N.C. Senate in 2008. Her former husband is Tom Taft, a former state senator from Greenville.

Student accused in teacher assault

LEXINGTON -- A female teacher at Brier Creek Elementary School was assaulted by a student Friday, authorities said yesterday.

The student, a 12-year-old boy, punched the teacher twice in the chest, said Maj. Edwin Grubb, the chief deputy of the Davidson County Sheriff's Office.

The school is at 175 Watford Road.

A petition regarding the incident will be filed with Davidson County Juvenile Services.

Former DA is under investigation

ROXBORO -- The former district attorney for Person and Caswell counties is being investigated for impersonating a police officer, and on Election Day, asking for help from people for whom he dismissed minor charges.

The allegations against former prosecutor Joel Brewer were presented yesterday in a search warrant filed by a State Bureau of Investigation agent.

A judge ruled this week that the warrant should be released as long as some information was redacted. The warrant states that an agent seized a gold-colored badge with Brewer's name on it and two folders containing copies of old citations.

Brewer hasn't been charged with any crimes. He retired as district attorney on March 1.

Brewer's attorney, George Daniel, declined to comment.
