IN OTHER AREAS

l Six members of the Winston-Salem State University Gay-Straight Student Alliance have been selected as 2010 Human Rights Campaign Carolinas Emerging Leaders. The members are Brandon Hughes, Shanda Neal, Dominic Totten, Michael Evans, Octavia Hedgepeth and Morgan Woods. It is the first time that students from WSSU have participated in this program.

This year the Emerging Leaders program has almost tripled its number of participants, spanning from across North and South Carolina. A component of the program is an intensive two-day leadership development program and admittance to the gala. This year's gala will feature Raleigh resident and American Idol's biggest-selling male artist Clay Aiken and Emmy Award-winning actress and producer, Meredith Baxter.

The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. It strives to end discrimination against LGBT and to improve the lives of LGBT Americans by advocating for equal rights and benefits in the workplace; ensuring families are treated equally under the law; and increasing public support among all Americans through innovative advocacy, education and outreach programs.

l Dejournette G. Moore has been promoted to the rank of private first class in the U.S. Army. She is a signal support systems specialist assigned to the Headquarters Battalion, 35th Air Defense Artillery, Osan Air Base, South Korea.

Moore is a 2008 graduate of Carver High School, and the granddaughter of Rosa Lee and Harry Burgess of Winston Salem.

l Air Force Airman Christopher M. Hill has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and earned four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Marie Hill of Mocksville.

l Navy Seaman Apprentice Theodore C. Walwik, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training and was meritoriously promoted to his current rank at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2004 graduate of Sarasota High School of Sarasota, Fla., and the son of Brenda S. Walwik of Sarasota, Fla., and William N. Walwik of Mocksville.
