The 2008 Blackstone Winemaker's Select Merlot (California, $11) is a well-made red that is a bit more complex than many supermarket wines at this price. This merlot gets complexity from additions of syrah, tannat, petite sirah and cabernet sauvignon. It starts off with smoky and earthy aromas that blend with cherry and plum flavors on the palate. Its firm tannins make it substantial enough to stand up to lamb and many grilled meats. Widely available.
