The recent merger of two of Northwest North Carolina's key conservation groups should save money and result in more precious mountain land and farmland being saved from development.
The groups are the Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust and High Country Conservancy. They've protected more than 15,000 acres between them, the Journal's Monte Mitchell reported.
Blue Ridge worked with the state to create the Pond Mountain game lands, where people will be able to hunt deer, and, in the off-season, ride horses on trails. High Country helped establish the Bear Paw State Natural Area near Valle Crucis.
The change will eliminate duplicated administrative costs and overlapping service areas, organizers say. The new group, the Blue Ridge Conservancy, should play a major role in preservation.
It should also help the tourism economy by conserving the breathtaking views that draw business to our region.
