ELKIN -- A Jonesville man died yesterday after he drove off the road and was thrown from his car in Wilkes County, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.
Roger Dale Cook, 59, of Bethel Road was driving south on U.S. 21 about 8.8 miles north of Elkin, a patrol spokeswoman said. The accident happened about 5:45 a.m.
Cook's 1999 Ford ran off the road to the right, and he overcorrected. As a result, his car overturned, and he was ejected.
Man arrested in terrorism plot
RALEIGH -- A man arrested yesterday in Kosovo is accused of being part of a terrorism plot that originated in North Carolina among people who planned attacks both at a U.S. military installation and abroad.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Raleigh said that Bajram Asllani, 29, of Mitrovica, Kosovo, is accused of plotting with men in North Carolina to engage in terrorism in Kosovo. Authorities say that he asked the U.S. men for money so he could buy land in Kosovo and build a base there to store weapons and ammunition for terrorism.
Asllani also is accused of providing propaganda videos for one of the men in the U.S. to translate and use to recruit others for terrorism.
Seven North Carolina men, including Daniel Patrick Boyd of Raleigh and two of his sons, were charged in the case last year.
Dog stands by his friends
GREENSBORO -- Two dogs were rescued from a 6-foot hole after another dog alerted workers.
A mowing crew from Greensboro's Field Operations Department saw a mixed-breed shepherd lie down near a fence and refuse to budge.
When the workers stopped to see why the dog refused to leave, they found two other dogs in a 6-foot hole where the dog was lying.
Officer P.G. Loflin of animal control pulled the trapped dogs from the hole. Loflin said that the three dogs were taken to the county animal center for evaluation, although all three appeared to be in good shape.
