Town's e-mail blast promotes politician's event

KILL DEVIL HILLS
A town clerk says she goofed when she sent notice of a fundraiser for a powerful North Carolina politician to everyone on a public e-mail list.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Thursday that Kill Devil Hills Town Clerk Mary Quidley admits mistakenly sending the solicitation for campaign cash to people who signed up for notices about crime alerts and the weather.

Residents of the Outer Banks resort town got the invitations for a June fundraiser for Democratic Senate leader Marc Basnight, whose district includes the town. Elected officials are prohibited from using public assets for campaign purposes.

A Basnight campaign staffer says the town clerk was only asked to let elected officials know about the fundraiser, which is a standard practice.
