Two new officers have been appointed to lead the Salvation Army's Winston-Salem Area Command and oversee the completion of projects here.
Majors Kent and Melody Davis came to Winston-Salem last month from the Greater Hickory Command, where they served for three years.
"It's a wonderful place -- challenging financially, but wonderful," Kent Davis said of the move to Winston-Salem.
The Davises, who have been with the Salvation Army for more than 22 years, will oversee operations in Forsyth, Davie, Yadkin and Stokes counties. They are replacing Majors Terry and Donna Israel, who have joined the Salvation Army's command in Dallas, Texas.
The local Salvation Army is trying to finish two remaining capital campaign projects, said Lisa Parrish, the director of operations for the Winston-Salem Area Command.
The organization is building a 5,000-square-foot multipurpose and out-
door play area onto its International Corps and Boys and Girls Club building on New Walkertown Road, she said.
The building houses after-school programs, tutoring, and summer camp for children in the neighborhoods nearby.
The Salvation Army is also working on transitional housing and renovations at its Center of Hope on Trade Street. The center is the only homeless shelter for families in Winston-Salem, Parrish said.
The organization is proud that it has been able to continue its programs without sacrificing quality during the recession, she said.
"We're always trying to find ways to do our programs in the most efficient way," Parrish said. "We want to be good stewards of the money people have given us."
Davis said he was looking forward to completing those projects in his new assignment in Winston-Salem. His parents were in the Salvation Army and he met his wife at a Salvation Army youth weekend. "Not only can you preach and teach," he said, "but you can be an administrator. What a great life."
