Surry County man dies after shoveling snow

SURRY COUNTY — A 54-year-old man in Dobson died in his home after returning from shoveling snow, Surry County EMS director John Shelton said.

The man had a heart attack, Shelton said.

"Resuscitation was attempted but failed," Shelton said.

Shelton did not identify the victim.

Shelton advised that people be cautious when going outside in this weather, especially if they try to do strenuous work such as shoveling snow.

"Those persons with existing medical conditions, such as respiratory or cardiovascular illness, should avoid it," Shelton said.

People should take frequent breaks and make sure to keep warm, especially their head, hands, neck and feet, he said.
