Thomasville teacher accused in sex case

A Thomasville High School teacher and coach is facing two felony charges after police said he had an inappropriate relationship with a female student.

Edward Heath Williamson, 33, is charged with two counts of sexual offense with a student. He has been suspended with pay while the case is being investigated, said Keith Tobin, the superintendent of Thomasville City Schools.

"We did take immediate action to make sure the child was safe," Tobin said. Once the investigation is completed, the school system will take any appropriate action, he said.

Tobin declined to comment further because the incident is a personnel matter.

Thomasville police said the investigation began Jan. 19 and Williamson was charged Friday. The victim in the case is a female student over the age of 16, police said.

Williamson is a instructional technological facilitator – a job focused on helping teachers and students incorporate technology in the classroom. He has been at Thomasville High for about three years, said Principal Deboy Beamon.

Williamson is also the quarterbacks coach for the school's football team.

Williamson was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. His next court appearance is scheduled Feb. 12.
