WINSTON-SALEM -- Bookmarks: Winston-Salem's Festival of Books has hired a former director of the Center for Women Writers at Salem College as its first executive director.
As executive director, Ginger Hendricks will manage the production of the free festival in September and of the related events leading up to it. She will also be responsible for fundraising, marketing and public relations.
"We are delighted that Ginger is joining us as Bookmarks' first executive director," said Debbie Harllee, the nonprofit organization's president. "This is a major move forward for the organization, securing her as executive director to oversee its operation and the work of our Community Volunteer Planning Committee."
Until now, Bookmarks, which was established in 2004 by the Junior League of Winston-Salem, has been organized and run by volunteers, with Harllee bearing much of the organizational responsibility.
Before serving as the director of the Center for Women Writers and Coordinator of Cultural Events at Salem College, Hendricks was the assistant to the Dean of Cultural and Special Programs at Elon University from 2003 to 2005.
Hendricks has more than seven years of experience in event planning, public relations, development, and media relations. She has worked with the festival for four years and helped coordinate two of its stand-alone "Conversations with…" events.
"I am excited to work with an organization whose mission is aligned with my own passion for reading and writing," Hendricks said.
On Sept. 11, the Bookmarks festival will return to the Arts District, where it was held for the first time in 2009.
