Taxpayers who donate to organizations working for relief for Haiti could be able to claim the donations as deductions on their 2009 taxes if a bill that the U.S. House of Representatives passed this week becomes law.
The bill would give taxpayers who make earthquake-related cash contributions before the end of February the ability to claim those contributions as deductions on their 2009 returns. The bill is similar to legislation enacted in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami in early 2005.
Rep. Virginia Foxx, a Republican who represents the 5th District of North Carolina, was one of 163 co-sponsors of the bill, which was passed on Wednesday by a unanimous vote. Other North Carolina representatives co-sponsored the bill, including David Price, D-4th; Larry Kissell, D-8th; Bob Etheridge, D-2nd; and George Butterfield, D-1st.
The bill must be passed by the U.S. Senate and signed by President Obama before it becomes law.
Perdue's top aide, campaigner says it's time for him to move on
RALEIGH -- Gov. Bev Perdue's top aide and the manager of her winning 2008 campaign is stepping down as her chief of staff.
Perdue said yesterday that Zach Ambrose will leave the job in the coming weeks.
Chrissy Pearson, Perdue's spokeswoman, said that Ambrose wanted to spend more time with his family and to try new things after essentially being on call 24 hours a day for Perdue for the past five years.
Ambrose became Perdue's chief of staff when she was lieutenant governor in 2005 and later became campaign manager. He also helped Perdue assemble her Cabinet before she took the oath of office in January 2009.
Davie County Hospital receives group's "gold seal" recognition
MOCKSVILLE -- Davie County Hospital said this week that it has received the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission.
The commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization, is the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.
The rating came from the hospital's ability to demonstrate compliance with the commission's national standards for health-care quality and safety. As part of the evaluation process, the commission conducted an unannounced, on-site evaluation of the hospital.
The commission's goal is "stimulating continuous, systematic and organizationwide improvement in a hospital's performance and the outcomes of care," said Mark Pelletier, the commission's executive director for hospital programs, accreditation and certification Services.
