RALEIGH — Davidson and Davie counties are among 37 North Carolina counties that will benefit from $28.2 million in federal-stimulus money geared toward building a 480-mile fiber-optic network for the N.C. Research and Education Network.
The money is being provided to MCNC, an independent, non-profit educational organization.
According to the governor's office, the design, construction and operation of the network are estimated to create more than 230 engineering and construction jobs. The office also said that the network could serve more than 1,500 school and community institutions, 180,000 businesses and more than 300,000 underserved families.
MCNC expects to issue within 60 days several requests for proposal for the design, construction and operation of the network. Construction is expected to last up to three years.
MCNC raised $11.7 million in matching funds through private sources, including $4 million from the
MCNC endowment, making the project a $40 million investment.
