Two of the top players on the Wake Forest men's soccer team — defender Ike Opara and forward Corben Bone — have decided to turn professional and give up their final seasons of eligibility.
Opara was the defensive player of the year, and Bone was the offensive player of the year in the ACC this past season. Both are juniors, and both are expected to be among the top picks in Major League Soccer's Super Draft, scheduled Jan. 14 in Philadelphia.
Bone and Opara have been mainstays for the Deacons the past three seasons, helping them to the national championship in 2007 and three straight College Cups. Both recently were selected to the All-Decade team, as picked by College Soccer News.
Bone had three goals and 13 assists and was fourth on the team in scoring with 19 points in 2009. He finjished his career with 38 assists to rank second in school history behind teammate Austin da Luz, a senior. Bone's 68 career points rank ninth in school history.
Opara, the ACC's top defender two straight seasons, had three goals and two assists in 17 games. He missed seven games to play for the United States in the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Wake Forest finished 17-4-3 last season after losing to Virginia, the eventual NCAA champion, 1-0 in overtime in the College Cup semifinals.
