A wintry mix could make driving hazardous this morning in Forsyth County while the northwest mountain counties could see more snow today, according to the National Weather Service.
The precipitation could start out in the Triad as snow or sleet, but rising temperatures mean that the precipitation will likely change over to rain, said Barrett Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Raleigh office.
"We'll pretty much see precipitation all day," he said.
Forecasters don't expect significant ice in the Triad, but drivers should watch for slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses.
The precipitation in the Northwest North Carolina mountains should start out as snow, but warm air aloft makes the forecast a little tricky as to how much of it comes down as snow, freezing rain or sleet, said Marc Chenard, a weather-service meteorologist in Blacksburg, Va.
If it stays cold enough for the snow to keep falling, the mountains could be looking at from 2 to 6 inches of snow today, he said. Accumulation will be on the lower end if sleet or rain mixes in with the snow.
The foothill counties will see some of that wintry mix as well, forecasters said. Surry and Wilkes counties could get from 2 to 4 inches of snow and sleet today, according to a winter weather advisory.
Strong, gusty winds are expected to move in tonight and Wednesday, blowing snow and driving wind chills down to about zero in the mountains overnight.
Those strong northwest winds will also blow across the Triad and central North Carolina.
Sustained winds are expected at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts of up to 45 mph on Wednesday, according to a hazardous-weather outlook that covers Forsyth, Guilford, Alamance, Davidson, Orange, Person and Randolph counties. Winds that strong could bring down tree limbs and lead to power outages.
