FAYETTEVILLE
A North Carolina man found competent years after a deadly 2004 road rampage is on trial.

The Fayetteville Observer reported Tuesday that jury selection has begun for 31-year-old Abdullah El-Amin Shareef of Raeford. He is charged with killing one person and running down four others in a 40-mile rampage between Fayetteville and Wake County.

He is accused of first-degree murder and could face the death penalty if convicted in Cumberland County. An additional attempted first-degree murder charge is pending in Harnett County.

Doctors said Shareef suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. Twice he had been found incompetent to stand trial.

His attorneys say he has been taking medication and his condition has improved.
