Latest round of winter weather could hit mid-morning

»  Comments | Post a Comment

More winter weather could move into the region beginning mid-morning today, bringing several inches of snow to the mountains but mostly rain and ice to the Piedmont, a national Weather Service meteorologist said.

Precipitation beginning as snow but gradually changing over to rain or freezing rain will likely start between 10 and 11 a.m., said Robyn Brown of the weather service's office in Blacksburg, Va.

Watauga and Ashe counties are under a winter storm warning, where 2 to 5 inches of snow and sleet are possible today, and another 3 to 6 inches possible tomorrow, particularly on west-facing slopes.

Most of the rest of the central portion of the state is under a winter weather advisory.

In Winston-Salem, less than one hundredth of an inch of ice accumulation is expected. The high today in the city is expected to reach 35 degrees.

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system has not announced any changes to its regular schedule today regarding the forecast.

The National Weather Service has also issued a winter storm warning in the southern mountains around Asheville, where forecasters say 4 to 6 inches of snow and sleet could fall, along with a brief period of rain Tuesday afternoon.

That includes the area around Maggie Valley, where a 30-foot tall wall of mud damaged four houses over the weekend. Geologists say this storm could cause more landslides.
