70 Wachovia jobs in Wilkes to move

Some will go out of state, others will go to Winston-Salem

The jobs of about 70 employees at the Wachovia operations center in Wilkesboro will be moving next year as part of changes connected to Wells Fargo's acquisition of the company, officials said.

Some of the jobs will move to Winston-Salem by the beginning of summer 2010, said company spokeswoman Christine Shaw. Those employees may apply for the positions or for jobs that will allow them to work at home.

Shaw would not say how many of the jobs will move to Winston-Salem.

Some of those 70 jobs now based in Wilkesboro will be transferred out of state by the middle of the summer.

Employees were told of the changes Tuesday. "As was shared at the time of the merger between Wells Fargo and Wachovia, just the size and complexity of this deal would mean that the elimination of positions, unfortunately, would take place across the company because of the duplication of duties or because they no longer fit in the new structure as we continue to move through the integration process," Shaw said in an e-mail.

The Wachovia-Wells Fargo operations center is on Oakwoods Road, near the U.S. 421 exit for Brushy Mountain Road.

Shaw would not say how many people work there, and said that the company has not decided if it will close the operations center.

"No decision has been made at this time," she said.

The operations-center building was once the headquarters for Northwestern Bank, which was later acquired by First Union. First Union bought Wachovia, but kept the Wachovia name. Wells Fargo agreed to buy Wachovia in October 2008.
