As of Tuesday noon, senior Carson Desrosiers of Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Mass., was still deciding whether to play college basketball next season at Wake Forest or Arizona State.
And then Coach Dino Gaudio of the Deacons rode into town.
"It was a 50-50 toss up between ASU and Wake,'' Coach Rich Nault of Central Catholic said. "He called Marquette yesterday to let them know he wasn't going to take the visit, which was supposed to be scheduled for this weekend.
"And then Coach Gaudio came in yesterday afternoon and really sealed the deal with the home visit.''
Desrosiers is a 6-11, 225-pound center-forward who averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds last season for a Central Catholic High team that won 23 and lost 2. Nault said that Desrosiers was especially effective on the perimeter, shooting 43 percent from 3-pont range.
"He's a different type of kid,'' Nault said. "He's not your typical 6-11, back-to-the-basket, score-in-the-low-post type of kid. He's very skilled with the ball. I would say his two biggest attributes are the fact he can shoot it from the perimeter and he's a great passer.
"So he can do a lot of different things for you. He really spreads the floor well. He can stroke it from behind the arc.''
As for body frame, Nault said that Desrosiers has a strong, lower body and should fill out in the chest and shoulders with increased weight training.
"He's a legit 6-11,'' Nault said. "I would say he weighs around 225. When you see him, he's gotten bigger. He definitely needs to fill out a little bit more.
Desrosiers, who had scholarship offers from more than 50 college programs including Notre Dame, Syracuse and Connecticut, is the fifth player to commit to Wake Forest for next year. The other four are 6-4 guard Tony Chenault of Philadelphia, 6-6 forward Travis McKie of Richmond, 6-8 forward Melvin Tabb of Raleigh and 6-4 guard J.T. Terrell of Charlotte.
