Wreck kills Winston-Salem man on moped

A Winston-Salem man was killed Friday night when he was hit by a pickup truck while riding his moped in northern Davidson County.

Jeffrey Todd Scott, 44, of 2447 Ardmore Manor, was riding mopeds with a friend on David Smith Road about 11 p.m. Friday. Scott's headlight was not working, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

"We were told that the headlight had been out and that he had been working on it, but hadn't gotten the kinks worked out," said Trooper J.S. Vernon of the highway patrol.

Derrick Conrad Bohannon, 26, of 150 Edgewood Lane, was turning his Toyota Tacoma onto David Smith Road from Edgewood.

He turned in front of Scott's moped without seeing it.

"He said he saw the first moped pass but never saw the second moped because there were no headlights," Vernon said.

The moped struck the truck. Scott was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bohannon was not charged in the accident, Vernon said.
