Some schools to offer tutoring

Free program will focus on reading, math proficiency

Free tutoring will be available to some students at Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools that didn't meet state targets for proficiency in math or reading.

"We're trying to increase the number of proficient students," said Loretta Marshall, the school system's Title I Supplemental Educational Services (SES) coordinator.

Parents have until Oct. 9 to sign up their children. To be eligible to receive the free tutoring, she said, students must receive free or reduced-price lunches.

The specifics of the tutoring vary from school to school, Marshall said. In general, students will receive a total of 30 hours of tutoring. Depending on a student's needs, the tutoring will focus on reading and/or math.

At some schools, the tutoring sessions will be offered after school twice a week for 1½ hours. At some schools, a single three-hour session will be offered on Saturdays. The schools will not provide transportation to and from the tutoring sessions.

The tutoring sessions, which are provided by private contractors approved by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, are paid for with Title I money.

The participating elementary schools are: Ashley, Bolton, Brunson, Cook, Easton, Forest Park, Gibson, Griffith, Hall-Woodward, Ibraham, Konnoak, Latham, Middle Fork, Old Town and Petree.

The participating middle schools are Philo, Hill and Mineral Springs. The participating high school is the School of Bio-Technology at Atkins.

A school's eligibility for the program is based on how it did with the state's Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals set for the school and for specific groups of students in the school. Title I schools that don't meet the AYP goals for three or more years in a row in either reading or math are required to offer free (SES) tutoring.

An information packet is being mailed next week to the homes of the all the students at the schools where tutoring will be offered, Marshall said. If a child qualifies to receive the free tutoring services, parents are asked to complete the application form and return it by mail or in person to their child's school. If parents have questions about whether their child is eligible, they should contact the child's school.

After receiving the applications, the Title I department will evaluate them and determine by Oct. 28 whether the child is eligible. Tutoring is scheduled to start the week of Nov. 2.

Even if a child isn't eligible for Title I SES tutoring, the school might have other tutoring programs available.
