New design emphasizes local news, easier reading

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Today marks a new era for the Winston-Salem Journal. It's the first edition of a newspaper that's redesigned to put local news first in a more attractive and compelling format.

As we've told you during the past few days, the push for this was our change to a slimmer paper size, from 12 inches to 11 inches. That's to save newsprint, but it also gave us the opportunity to make other changes that highlight our best work and update our look, making it cleaner and more readable.

Local news is out front, followed by national and international news. You'll find Sports in the B section every day, followed by our Features sections on Wednesday through Sunday. Our standard type size is about 10 percent larger, and we've enlarged our puzzles. And you'll find two old favorites, SAM and the Blum's Almanac planting guide, on our redesigned A2. Our Weather map will be on A6 every day.

There's more information in our inside box below, and we've put a graphic on journalnow.com that explains many of these changes in more detail.

Change can be exciting, but it can also be unsettling. So we want to hear from you. Call us at 727-7308 and let us know what you think.

And we're serious about one thing that hasn't changed: our commitment to doing the best job we can serving Winston-Salem, Forsyth County and the rest of Northwest North Carolina.
