IN EDUCATION

□ The UNC School of the Arts has recognized the following six faculty members with UNCSA Excellence in Teaching Awards: Wayne Crawford, School of Filmmaking; Michael Dodds, School of Music; Dayna Fox, School of Dance; Lynda Moss, High School Academic Program; David E. Smith, School of Design and Production; and Marilyn Taylor, School of Music. Taylor also received an UNC Board of Governors Awards for Excellence in Teaching this spring, and was honored at the school's commencement exercises in May.

The UNC Board of Governors established the Excellence in Teaching awards in 1994. At UNCSA, six teachers are chosen each year from those current, full-time faculty members who are nominated to receive the award, which recognizes teachers who have, among other things, demonstrated personal interest and concern for the students; enthusiasm for and interest in the subject they teach; good command of the subject being taught; up-to-date scholarship and/or creative work and awareness of recent developments in their field; and a commitment to the entire school community as well as to the greater community.

Ashley Hodges was named to the honor list of Oxford College, the two-year liberal arts division of Emory University in Oxford, Ga., for the 2009 spring semester. She is the daughter of Jack M. Hodges Jr. and Deena Hodges of Yadkinville.

The scholarship program was established in memory of all past board members who volunteered their time, knowledge and expertise to form and administer a water system in order to provide quality, safe, drinking water.

Laura Christine Crysel of Lewisville, was named to the 2009 spring system dean's list at Wake Forest University. She has also graduated, summa cum laude, with a B.A. in psychology from WFU. She will continue her education this fall at the University of Florida where she has received an appointment as a graduate assistant in the psychology department, and has been awarded a Grinter Fellowship recognizing her potential as an outstanding graduate student.

Crysel is a 2005 graduate of West Wilkes High School.

□ The following area students are 2009 spring graduates of Barton College in Wilson: Marissa K.E. Mokaren, Greensboro, B.S.; Emily Catherine Sale, Welcome, B.S.; and Jessica Danielle Galasso, Winston-Salem, B.S.N.

Anna Elizabeth Queen of Advance, recently participated in the Summer Medical and Research Training Program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. The nine-week employment and educational program for students interested in exploring a career in scientific research, pairs undergraduate students with BCM mentors to conduct biomedical research in a broad range of areas. Students also attend daily seminars on biomedical research, GRE preparation workshops, and participate in various career-development activities.

Sarah Tesh has graduated, magna cum laude, with a B.S. in communication, from Freed-Hardeman University in Tennessee. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Tesh of Clemmons.

Jonathan Dallmann, a physics major, was named to the 2009 spring semester dean's list at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn. He is the son of John and Gala Dallmann of Purlear.

Katheryn Diane Ballard has received a Dean's Outstanding Scholar Award for the department of political science and public affairs at Western Carolina University's College of Arts and Sciences for the 2008-09 academic year. She is a senior and is majoring in political science and sociology.

Ballard is the daughter of Robert and Debra Ballard of Winston-Salem.

Emma Kate Gannaway has graduated cum laude from N.C. State University with a B.A. in communication, and a minor in parks, recreation, and tourism management. She is a graduate of Reynolds High School, and the daughter of Bill and Diane Gannaway of Winston-Salem.

Kyle Andrew Warise of Winston-Salem, has earned a B.B.A. from Mercer University's Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics.

Justin D. Doroshenko of Kernersville, has graduated from Georgia College and State University with a Master of Education degree, with a major in health and physical education.

Troy Arthur Spencer of High Point, was named to the Spring 2009 dean's list for the Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University.

IN THE ARTS

Christian Covington recently attended the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar in New York City, where he was one of 16 high-school students in the country to attend. He is currently a rising high-school senior at UNC School of the Arts, where he is a student of John Beck.

Christian is the son of T. Lee and Carol Covington of Clemmons.

Ryan Dodge participated in this summer's Boston University Tanglewood Institute, a program of musical study and performance that is considered one of the most prestigious summer music programs for high-school students in the country. He was among the 338 students selected from auditions held in seven cities throughout the country to work with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston University faculty, and visiting artists.

Ryan has studied music composition for years, and is a senior at UNC School of the Arts. He is the son of Cynthia Dodge of Winston-Salem.

IN CIVIC AFFAIRS

Samantha Creasy, a student at West Forsyth High School, recently served as a page for the N.C. House of Representatives. She is the daughter of Boyd and Sharon Creasy of Clemmons, and was sponsored by Rep. William McGee, R-Forsyth.

Ian MacDonald, a student at Reagan High School, recently served as a page for the N.C. House of Representatives. He is the son of David and Heather MacDonald of Winston-Salem, and was sponsored by Rep. Larry Brown, R-Forsyth.

IN THE MILITARY

□ Lance Corporal Samuel Mills recently completed the Basic Reconnaissance Course at Camp Pendleton, Calif. The intensive nine-week course included training in individual skills, combat patrol, and amphibious reconnaissance. Upon graduation he was assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Mills is the son of Greg and Kim Mills of Clemmons, and a 2008 graduate of West Forsyth High School.

□ Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Michael C. MacDonald has been mobilized and activated for deployment overseas to a forward operating base in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is a combat medic with 13 years of military service, and is usually assigned to the 478th Civil Affairs Battalion, based in Miami, Fla.

MacDonald is the son of Randy and Bobbie MacDonald of Winston-Salem, and a 1996 graduate of a high-school program at Turo Night School in Winston-Salem.

□ Army Pfc. Marcus Sims has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2005 graduate of North Forsyth High School, and received an associate degree in 2008 from Forsyth Technical Community College.

□ Army Pfc. Khowry M. Thorpe has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He is the son of Gwendolyn D. Davis of Winston-Salem, and a 2004 graduate of Parkland High School.

IN SCOUTING

Taylor Bee Austin Brown, a member of Boy Scout Troop 934 of the Mount Tabor Methodist Church since 1995, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Taylor restored one of the hockey-field bleachers at the Children's Methodist Home. To raise money for his project, he organized a car wash with the help of other scouts.

Taylor is a senior at Mount Tabor High School, and the son of Don and Dawn Brown of Winston-Salem.

IN SPORTS

Lamar Hanna, the coach of the Winston-Salem Grayhounds youth football team has been named the 2009 Liberty Mutual Responsible Coaching Award winner from North Carolina. The award recognizes men and women who emphasize sportsmanship and character-building in their approach to mentoring children.

Hanna is one of only 41 winners nationwide out of more than 560 coaches nominated for the award by parents and peers. The award, which includes $250 to help offset the cost of running a team, comes from the Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports program, an online community that helps coaches and parents maximize the positive role they play in young athletes' lives, through helpful blogs, videos and curriculum.

IN OTHER AREAS

Keyshawn Dunwoody-Spears attended the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., in July. He is a sixth-grader at Hill Middle Magnet School, where he was nominated by his teacher, Janice Campbell, who recognized him as a student with the scholastic merit and leadership potential to represent his school at the youth leadership program for exceptional fifth- and sixth-graders.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kim and April Spears of Winston-Salem, and Ms. Shameakia Dunwoody of Detroit, Mich.

Jeff Bacon, the executive chef and program director of the Triad Community Kitchen, has been named the American Culinary Federation's southeast region vice president. The American Culinary Federation Inc., established in 1929, is the premier professional organization for chefs in North America.

□ The following have been named recipients of grants from the Matthew Alan Gfeller Memorial Fund of The Winston-Salem Foundation:

Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, $5,000 to support the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma; Centenary United Methodist Church, $4,400 to renovate the Scout Hut for Boy Scout Troop 920; Summit School, $1,000 for maintenance and equipment for the Matthew Alan Gfeller Weight Room in the school's new athletic center, and $1,000 to support the school's drama department; and Carter Vocational High School, $500 to support the needs of Carter Vocational High School.

The first recipient of the Matthew Alan Gfeller Foundation Scholarship is Howell Smith. Howell has played varsity football and lacrosse while also participating in the orchestra for all four of his years at Reynolds High School. He is an active member of Key Club, and has participated in numerous volunteer and community-service projects. He also recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 920.

The scholarship is awarded annually to one graduating Reynolds High School senior with an annual award of $2,000 for four years to attend an accredited post-secondary educational institution.
