LEXINGTON -- Gerald Hege is planning to run for his old office in 2010, according to WGHP/FOX 8.
Hege is the former sheriff of Davidson County who left office after pleading guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice.
Hege's son, Jerry Hege, told the television station that his father was planning to run.
Neither Hege nor his son returned calls requesting comment yesterday.
"Vote for Hege" signs have been popping up in yards across the county over the past week, even though the filing period has not started. The earliest Hege could file for the November 2010 election is February.
Residents along Ridge Road told WGHP, the Winston-Salem Journal's news partner, that the former sheriff came by Thursday morning to ask them to put campaign signs in their yards.
Gerald Hege served as Davidson County sheriff from 1994 to 2004 and became well-known for his off-the-wall style, including painting the jail pink with crying, blue teddy bears on the walls.
Symphony group gets $20,000 grant
The Winston-Salem Symphony Association has received a $20,000 Creative Workforce grant from the N.C. Arts Council to underwrite the symphony position of assistant conductor/education director for the current fiscal year.
Creative Workforce grants support the preservation of critical jobs and artists' contracts.
Matthew Troy has been the assistant conductor since May 2008. He oversees the Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Orchestras program and the symphony's educational-outreach initiatives.
Nancy Trovillion, the deputy director of the N.C. Arts Council, said that arts organizations made 79 requests for Creative Workforce grants but that only 18 were financed.
The symphony also received a general-support grant of $70,000 from the council.
Site of proposed dog park out today
CLEMMONS -- A group that wants to build a dog park in Clemmons or southwestern Forsyth County will meet at 10 a.m. today at the Clemmons branch of the Forsyth County Public Library, 3554 Clemmons Road
It plans to announce the site where it would like the 21/2 -acre park built. The proposed park would have two play areas, to separate large dogs from small dogs. There would also be a water feature to keep dogs cool, and an area for obedience training or playdates.
Donations for the park are being accepted through the Winston-Salem Foundation and Southern Community Bank.

Davidson County horse show today
LEXINGTON -- The Humane Society of Davidson County will have its sixth annual horse show today, its biggest fundraiser of the year.
The show will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Fox Den Farms, 2585 Jerusalem Road, Lexington. Concessions will be available. Spectators should bring lawn chairs or blankets.
Admission is $2, free for children under 12. The fee for showing horses ranges from $7 to $10.
No session called over Perdue's veto
RALEIGH -- Gov. Bev Perdue's first veto will stand.
House Speaker Joe Hackney, D-Orange, and Senate leader Marc Basnight, D-Dare, decided yesterday against a special legislative session to override her veto of confidentiality legislation.
Hackney said that the expense and time required for a veto session were not justified. He said that the issues aren't urgent and that Perdue's concerns can be discussed when legislators open their 2010 session in May.
Perdue vetoed a bill approved unanimously by the House and Senate last month that she said unnecessarily adds new restrictions on public access to information. The legislation would have expanded the list of requests and documents General Assembly members could keep secret.
‘Hip-hop summit' on finance today
GREENSBORO -- Russell Simmons and Benjamin Chavis will be the hosts of a "hip-hop summit" on finances at noon today at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The session will offer advice from financial experts, celebrities and community leaders on financial self-discipline and empowerment. Among the guests will be musicians Lil' Mo and MC Lyte, as well as Rocsi, the co-host of the BET series 106 & Park.
The summit is free and open to the public.
