NBA star Chris Paul, for on his fourth "Winston-Salem Weekend,'' will work with people in the community to assemble care packages for American troops overseas.
Paul, who attended Wake Forest University after graduating from West Forsyth High School, has held a weekend of events since 2006 to engage local students and residents in volunteering and giving back.
His "Day of Service'' this year will be Sept. 25, with the assembling of care packages, a program being done in conjunction with HeroBox, a non-profit organization that offers support to troops in active duty.
Paul is asking people in the community to get involved by donating any of various items needed. The items include: foods such as beef jerky, dried fruit, powdered drink mix, energy or granola bars and hard candy; hygienic items such as baby wipes, hand sanitizer, deodorant for men and women, body lotion and sunscreen; and entertainment items such as DVDs and CDs, books, pens, pencils, drawing pads, magazines, Tupperware and AA batteries.
Drop-off locations include local State Farm offices and the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club on Reynolds Park Road.
"The Day of Service is always one of my favorite events of the weekend because we try to set an example to many students and volunteers on the importance of giving back to your community," Paul said in a statement.
The Day of Service will begin at 9 a.m. at the Boys & Girls Club with the unveiling of Paul's new children's book, Long Shot: Never Too Small to Dream Big, which will be released by Simon & Schuster on Sept. 22. Paul will present grants from his CP3 Foundation from proceeds of last year's event to Senior Services Meals-on-Wheels, Special Olympics of North Carolina and Make-a-Wish of Central and Western North Carolina.
Afterward, Paul and friends from the NBA will stay for several projects including a youth literacy initiative, the packing of care packages for the troops and activities with athletes from Special Olympics of North Carolina. Afterwards, the group will then participate in a Feed the Children food distribution for needy families.
In addition, the 2009 Chris Paul's Winston-Salem Weekend will consist of the taping of the new ESPN show Homecoming at Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University on Sept. 24, a bowling tournament on Sept. 25, a youth basketball clinic and a gala honoring the late Coach Skip Prosser on Sept. 26, and a community church service and social at the Benton Convention Center on Sept. 27.
All of the proceeds from the weekend will benefit the CP3 Foundation, which supports many charities and programs in Winston-Salem.
