Yadkin County commissioners voted today to repair the plumbing at the county jail, which was closed Aug. 27 after a state inspection.
Repairs at the jail are expected to take four to six months. It's not clear how much the repairs will cost. Commissioners considered two previous bids of $75,127 and $84,958.
Commissioners also agreed today to form a five-member jail committee that will consider alternatives to building a new jail on Hoots Road. The board also plans to continue pursuing a deal with Yadkinville to provide utilities for the Hoots Road site.
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services ordered the jail closed after a recent inspection, but the jail's plumbing issues have been a long-standing issue, going back for more than a year, according to the past three inspections.
The jail did not have "adequate commodes" or "adequate lavatories" according to a July 2008 inspection. Toilets leaked, and most cells and dayrooms didn't have hot and cold water. Toilets weren't a problem listed in the January 2009 inspection, but inmates still did not have adequate access to hot and cold water, the report says.
Both toilets and lavatories were cited in the most recent inspection.
Yadkin County is spending about $2,500 a day to house inmates in other counties, including Forsyth.
