Food Briefs: Best of Lewisville to offer several cooking contests

■ The Best of Lewisville, Sept. 19 in the Lewisville Town Square, will include several cooking contests.

The contests are for pies, cakes, cookies, bread, barbecue and chili. Entries are not restricted to Lewisville residents.

People can submit multiple entries. The cost for one entry is $5, and each additional entry costs $3. A portion of the proceeds will be used to support the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Entries must be brought to the festival by 10:45 a.m. Sept. 19. Judging will begin at 11:45.

Stokes Extension course to cover healthy cooking

■ The Stokes County office of the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service will offer a four-week cooking course from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays beginning Sept. 28.

The course, at the Stokes County Center in Danbury, will focus on preparations of simple and healthful foods, and basic cooking techniques.

A program for children ages 5 to 12 will be offered at the same time.

The cost is $20 a person, $30 a couple, or $30 for a parent and a teenager. The cost for children 12 and under is $10, or free when a parent enrolls in the adult class.

Affordable-housing group's fundraiser to feature food

■ Partners for Homeownership will hold its fourth annual Taste of Homeownership fundraiser from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, featuring local restaurants and other food-and-beverage businesses.

Partners for Homeownership is a nonprofit developer of affordable housing in Forsyth County.

Participating restaurants include Bib's Downtown, Celtic Cafe, Sampan Chinese restaurant, Zevely House, Meridian and Mid-Town Dessertery. The fundraiser will include wine from Raylen Vineyards and beef from Foothills Brewing.

It also will include a food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. People are encouraged to bring a canned or other nonperishable food donation.

The "Taste" will be at the Enrichment Center, 1006 S. Marshall St.

Tickets are $20, available in advance or at the door. For tickets or more information, call 725-8704.
