DeAndre Presley will start at quarterback Saturday in Appalachian State's season-opening game at East Carolina, Coach Jerry Moore said yesterday.
Moore's announcement ended speculation whether Armanti Edwards, the Mountaineers' All-America quarterback who has missed preseason practice as result of a lacerated foot, would be ready in time to start against the Pirates.
Edwards practiced Monday, for the first time since cutting his foot in a lawn-mowing accident on Aug. 5, but did not practice Tuesday. No announcement has been made whether Edwards will dress for the game with the Pirates, but Moore said that he does not plan to play Edwards.
Presley, a 5-11, 170-pound sophomore from Tampa, Fla., was a backup to Edwards last season. He played in nine games, passing for 397 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 415 yards and seven touchdowns.
Presley's lone start came in a 35-10 victory over Western Carolina when he filled in for an injured Edwards. He passed for 158 yards and one touchdown, and rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns in that game.
"I'm excited and really want to make the most of this opportunity," said Presley, who was told that he would start after yesterday's practice. "I don't feel any pressure at all. It's just a matter of going out and having fun and continuing to do what we've been doing all preseason long."
