ASU's Edwards doubtful for game against ECU

Jerry Moore, Appalachian State's football coach, said that he doubts that quarterback Armanti Edwards will play in Saturday's season-opening game at East Carolina.

Edwards returned to practice Monday after missing all of preseason camp as result of cut to his right foot sustained Aug. 5 in a lawn-mowing accident.

"We're like anybody else, we're not going to put a guy out there who is two-thirds ready to play," Moore said. "I doubt seriously if he'll play."

Moore said that Edwards, a senior who won the Walter Payton Award as the top player in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision last season, did practice some Monday but that the foot isn't fully healed.

"He threw very well, we're pleased with that, but I'd really be worried about him playing on that (foot) right now," Moore said.

If Edwards doesn't play, Moore said that DeAndre Presley, who backed up Edwards last season as a freshman, would likely get the starting nod against East Carolina.
