Officials put Wiley Middle School on lockdown after report of armed person

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Wiley Middle School was placed on lockdown briefly this morning after a resident told police that someone armed with a rifle was running behind a female near Reynolds Gymnasium on Northwest Boulevard.

Officers searched the area shortly after 10:30, and they didn't find an armed suspect, Winston-Salem police said in a statement.

They learned that members of the JROTC program from nearby Reynolds High School had taken an inoperable rifle to the gym where they attended class.

That is when a concerned citizen saw the cadets running to the gym as one of them carried the rifle, police said.

Police told school officials what they learned about the incident, and Wiley Middle returned to normal activity.
