IN OTHER AREAS
□ The Friends of Richard J. Reynolds Auditorium recently presented Reynolds High School a check for $30,000 for the school's programming needs. The donation was part of a recent capital campaign fund drive by the Friends to help finance the acquisition of a customized acoustical shell for Reynolds Auditorium.
□ Two members of the Summit School Historians club at Summit School recently received awards in essay contests at the 2009 Tar Heel Junior Historian Association Annual Convention in Raleigh. Joseph Hilleary won second place in the Civil War essay contest, and Sophie Hennings won first place in the Tar Heel Junior Historian Essay contest. Sophie's article will appear in the fall 2009 issue of the magazine Tar Heel Junior Historian.
□ Seven new directors have been elected to the board of directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters Services Inc. for 2009-10. They are: Skip Brown, TriStone Community Bank; Margaret Currie-Coyoy, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center; Ben Hough, Hatteras Financial; Morris Morrison, Pfizer; Sharon Pratt, HanesBrands Inc.; Lisa Snowden, Piedmont Federal Savings Bank; and Traci Welch, Wachovia.

IN EDUCATION
□ Ashley Anne Clay has graduated, magna cum laude, from Clemson University with a degree in psychology and creative writing. She was honored at Clemson University's Student-Athlete Enrichment Honor Roll Banquet, where she was the recipient of the Bill D'Andrea Service Award, awarded to a senior who has excelled in the classroom, has provided key leadership, and has been involved in community service. In addition, Clay received the Athletic Director's Academic Excellence Award, and the ACC Top Six Community Service Award.
Clay is a member of the 2009 Teach For America Corps and is a 2nd grade teacher in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. She is the daughter of Chris and Barb Clay of Clemmons.
□ Julia Lankton of Winston-Salem, was presented three awards during the 2009 Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine Graduation Awards. The awards are: the Alfred Angrist Prize in Necropsy Pathology Award, given to a fourth-year student who shows proficiency in pathology; the District of Columbia Academy of Veterinary Medicine Award, a commemorative plaque and cash award given by the District of Columbia Academy of Veterinary Medicine Board of Directors to a fourth-year student who demonstrates proficiency in small animal medicine and/or surgery; and the E. L. Tyler and C.W. Vaughan Jr. Endowed Externship Scholarship for financially deserving veterinary students.
□ Hannah Valen was named to the 2008-09 Lawrence University's dean's list. She is a 2006 graduate of Onalaska High School, and is the daughter of Dr. Peter and Berit Valen of Winston Salem.
□ Kenneth T. Wheeler III has graduated from the United States Military Academy. He received his degree in environmental geography from the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering. He also received the Congressional Medal of Honor Award for Excellence in Geography, the National Organization of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Award for Excellence in the Environmental Engineering Sequence, and several department awards, including the top overall GPA.
Wheeler was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Aviation Branch of the US Army. He has been assigned to Fort Sill in Oklahoma for advanced officer training after which he will report to Fort Rucker in Alabama for helicopter flight school. He is a 2005 graduate of Mount Tabor High School, and son of Kenneth T. Wheeler Jr. and C. Anne Wallen of Winston-Salem.
□ Lauren Michelle Hughes has been named to the 2009 spring semester ‘s dean's list at Duke University, where she is a pre-med student with a major in psychology and a minor in biology. She is a 2007 graduate of Mount Tabor High School and was the recipient of the L. Gordon, Jr. and June D. Pfefferkorn Scholarship.
Lauren is the daughter of Bryan and Tammy Hughes of Pfafftown.
□ Garry Allen Ogden Jr. graduated cum laude from Georgia State University with a B.S. degree in business and accounting. He is currently enrolled in the Graduate School at GSU.
Ogden was an honor graduate of Lakeside High School in Atlanta, Ga. He is the son of Dr. Debra R. Wynecoff-Ogden of Winston-Salem, and Garry Ogden of Atlanta, and the grandson of Donnell and Dorothy Wynecoff of Winston-Salem, and Addie Ogden of Atlanta.

□ Shanomie Blackwood, a freshman at the UNC School of the Arts, is the first winner of The Larry Leon Hamlin and Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin/Winston-Salem Urban League Endowed Scholarship. She is enrolled in the B.F.A program in the UNCSA School of Design and Production, where she is studying scene design and technical direction.
Shanomie is the daughter of Benjamin Blackwood of Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from LaGuardia Arts High School, where she was been actively involved in many areas of stagecraft. She completed an internship with the Kaufman Center in New York, where she built and painted scenery for children's summer workshops. She also won an Alumni & Friends Award at her high-school graduation.
The Larry Leon Hamlin and Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin/Winston-Salem Urban League Endowed Scholarship was created in 2007 to honor the late Larry Leon Hamlin, the founder and artistic director of the National Black Theatre Festival, and his wife, Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin.
□ James Elva Austin of Winston-Salem, has graduated from Radford Unversity at the end of the 2009 spring semester. He earned a B.S. degree in psychology.
□ Kathryn C. Clark of Winston-Salem has recently become recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at the UNC Chapel Hill. Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to promoting and recognizing academic achievement, and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.
□ Lauren Jade Stokes, a sophomore and Spanish major, has earned recognition for the 2008 fall and 2009 spring chancellor's list at Appalachian State University. She was also inducted into the ASU chapter of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. She traveled to the Dominican Republic with ASU students for a study abroad and worked with Orphanage Outreach last spring.

IN THE ARTS
□ Mary Katherine Sherrill Lowder has been awarded the N.C. Society of Historians distinguished Robert Bruce Cooke Family History Award for her publication, The Jonathan "John" Lewis Lowder and Emma Transou Lowder Family of Forsyth County, North Carolina. The genealogical and biographical volume chronicles Lowder and Transou pioneers in the Quaker and Moravian movement of colonial North Carolina, and the family's role in shaping communities of Forsyth County for 250 years.
□ Miranda Propst, a student at West Forsyth High School, represented the school and Winston-Salem at the Cannon Music Camp at Appalachian State University this summer. She received the 2009 Directors Award for the Chambers Singers choir, and the 2009 Bill McCloud Music Educators of North Carolina Award. She was also awarded a full scholarship for Cannon Music Camp in 2010.
Miranda, a rising senior, will be one of the drum majors for marching band at West Forsyth High School this year. She is the daughter of Rodney and Louise Lash.
IN THE MILITARY
□ Air Force Airman Matthew A. Oswell has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is a 2008 graduate of Davie High School, and the son of Tonda Oswell of Mocksville,.
□ Navy Ensign Denny L. East reported for naval aviator training at the Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas. He is attending a 13-month undergraduate jet pilot training course that combines basic studies in engineering and navigation.
East is a 2001 graduate of East Surry High School, and a 2008 graduate of U.S. Naval Academy with a bachelor's degree. He is the son of Diann L. and Denny L. East of Ararat, N.C.
□ Army National Guard Spec. Nicholas E. Armstrong has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consists of basic infantry training and advanced individual training. He graduated in 2001 from the high school program at Davidson Community College, and received a bachelor's degree in 2008 from Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro.
Armstrong is the son of Laurie and Martin Armstrong of Lewisville.
IN SCOUTING
□ Austin Chunn, a member of Boy Scout Troop 715 at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. For his project, Austin planned and implemented a landscaping project at the South Fork Church of Christ. His Court of Honor ceremony was officiated by Jerry Taylor who recently retired after 29 years in scouting both as a Boy Scout and as a Scout Leader. Austin is the 28th Eagle Scout with whom Jerry helped lead through scouts.
Austin recently graduated from Calvary Baptist High School. He is the son of Brian and Vicki Chunn of Winston-Salem.
