Q. I was in downtown Winston-Salem yesterday and noticed some yellow-and-white paw prints on the sidewalks every once in a while. I think one of them said "Rico K9" and another said "Paws in the City." I'm curious to know why they are there. -- S.B.

A. The paw prints, which are stenciled on with a temporary, chalk-based paint, are the work of Fur-Ever Friends volunteers who are trying to spread the word about an upcoming fundraiser, Paws in the City.

Fur-Ever Friends of North Carolina is a nonprofit organization that promotes animal welfare.

Paws in the City, described as a "sophisticated, fun social gathering without the formal wear," will take place on Nov. 6, from 6:30 until 10:30 p.m. at the Millennium Center.

Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.

Advance tickets are available online at www.fureverfriendsnc.org. They can also be purchased by calling 800-838-3006.

Proceeds will be donated to the Rico Memorial Fund for sick and injured animals.

The Rico Fund was established in 2004 to help pay for cancer treatments for Rico, a bomb-sniffing dog with the Winston-Salem Police Department, who was euthanized because he was suffering from lymphoma.

The fund has been continued to help residents who need financial assistance to care for their pets.

Q. When will daylight saving time end this year? -- P.W.

A. Since 2007, the first Sunday in November has been the date for the end of daylight saving time.

We will "fall back" an hour at 2 a.m. Nov. 1, giving everyone an extra hour of sleep.
