Q. The Hanes Mall post office was one of Winston-Salem's greatest assets -- until it cut its hours and closed Sundays. Only one location in the western part of the city still has a stamp machine. If it's out of stamps, where can you get stamps on the weekend? -- C.H.
A. Several retail outlets that are open on weekends sell stamps at face value.
You can buy stamps at Costco, CVS, Walgreens and Office Depot, said Carl Walton, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service. Food Lion and Whole Foods stores also sell stamps, as does Wachovia Bank.
In Winston-Salem, three contract post offices offer the same services as regular post offices. One of them, at 133 Jonestown Road, is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
Q. What has happened to Max Factor? I have worn its Pan-Stik for 20 years, and now I can't find it anywhere. Why can't I find it in stores anymore? -- E.J.
A. In June, the Wall Street Journal reported that Procter & Gamble Co. planned to stop selling Max Factor cosmetics in drugstores in America by early 2010.
Although the brand is still growing fast internationally, its popularity has dwindled here, the newspaper reported.
The brand's Web site -- www.maxfactor.com -- directs buyers in this area to Kmart and Wal-Mart stores. An online search shows that area Wal-Mart stores have the Pan-Stik. A Web search turned up Max Factor products at www.drugstore.com and www.ulta.com.
