Q. North Carolina received $737 million for road work under the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment act. What are the plans for the Triad? -- K.S.

A. David Spainhour, a division maintenance engineer for Division 9, made up of Stokes, Forsyth, Davie, Davidson and Rowan counties, said that the division was allotted about $46 million.

The division has identified three projects, but it still needs final approval from the N.C. Board of Transportation. That could happen as early as November.

Here are the projects::

□ $1.6 million to upgrade and replace electronic message boards, mostly around Winston-Salem and Salisbury.

□ $2.5 million to resurface about six miles of U.S. 421 in Forsyth County.

□ $1.3 million to repave about seven miles of U.S. 52, from King city limits north toward Surry County.

The final project costs may vary.

Q. What is the status of Peace Haven Road between Country Club Road and the U.S. 421 bridge? -- C.H.

A. Robby Stone, the director of the city of Winston-Salem's streets division, said that base repair is currently taking place in the area.

Base repair is the excavation of the failed pavement and sub grade.

Reconstruction will use more suitable materials.

Because cold weather is on its way, resurfacing from Country Club to the U.S. 421 ramp will begin in spring 2010.
