Q. Joel Coliseum will be the site of a rock-music show on Nov. 12 featuring REO Speedwagon and other bands. Why do rock acts usually bypass Joel in favor of Greensboro when it comes to this area? -- G.S.
A. Bucky Dame, the director of the Joel Coliseum complex, said in an e-mail that there are many factors when an act decides whether to include a city on its tour schedule, regardless of whether it is rock, country or R&B.
"For clarification, in most cases it is the artist's agent, manager or promoter that is making the decision which city to play and not the act itself,'' Dame said.
"The major factor in most cases for shows choosing Greensboro over Winston-Salem is seating capacity. The Greensboro Coliseum can seat approximately 6,000 more patrons than Joel Coliseum," Dame said. "With the high cost of live tours, the additional seats are the difference between a profitable evening and losing money for the promoter.
"Another factor to some extent is the history that the act has in that particular city or venue. The availability of dates is another consideration; both venues have lost and gained shows due to date availability."
