Sgt. Mickey Hutchens, the Winston-Salem police officer who was shot Wednesday, has suffered a setback.
"His condition has worsened," city spokesman Ed McNeal said Saturday night.
Hutchens, 50, was shot in the face, and the bullet penetrated his skull.
He had been listed in critical but stable condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Officer Daniel Clark, 28, who was hit with two bullets, was released from the hospital Friday.
The officers had chased suspect Monte Denard Evans, 35, of Winston-Salem, after Evans showed up at the Bojangles' restaurant on Peters Creek Parkway to confront his former wife, whom he had been charged with abusing. Evans opened fire on the officers and was killed in the shootout, authorities said.
Hutchens, a patrol supervisor, is a 27-year veteran of the Winston-Salem Police Dept. During a Friday news conference, Police Chief Scott Cunningham said that a neurosurgeon told him that Hutchens' injuries were "critical and grave.
