Crash kills Advance woman

An Advance woman died Wednesday after the car she was riding in went down an embankment and struck a tree off of N.C. 801, the Highway Patrol said today.

The crash happened about 4:25 p.m. about four miles north of Cooleemee. The highway patrol said Russell Tallent, 64, was driving north on the highway in a 2008 Pontiac Vibe when he came upon another vehicle that had slowed to make a left turn. Witnesses told the highway patrol that Tallent veered off the road to the right to avoid hitting the vehicle.

The car went down an embankment and struck a tree. Tallent's wife, Lillian Tallent, 83, died at the scene, the highway patrol said.

Russell Tallent was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he was being treated for injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, the highway patrol said.

Russell Tallent was wearing a seat belt but Lillian Tallent was not, the highway patrol said.
