FAYETTEVILLE
Cape Fear Valley Health System and FirstHealth of the Carolinas will both be allowed to build hospitals in or near Hoke County, the state told health-system officials last week.
The two companies had submitted what they believed would be competing proposals to build hospitals in or near the growing county.
FirstHealth, which runs Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, submitted its proposal in May for a $30 million to $35 million, eight-bed hospital in Raeford.
Cape Fear Valley followed suit in June with a proposal for a $79 million, 41-bed hospital in Cumberland County on the Hoke County line.
The competition had divided residents in the county.
The competition between the companies is similar to what Wake Forest University Baptist and Forsyth medical centers went through in proposing competing hospitals less than four miles apart in Northwest North Carolina.
Wake Forest Baptist is proposing to build a small hospital in Advance, and Forsyth Medical has proposed one in Clemmons.
Wake Forest Baptist's hospital proposal has won approval from the state, but construction has not yet begun.
Although Forsyth Medical Center won conditional state approval for its hospital as well, Wake Forest Baptist has challenged the decision.
