Mary Alspaugh said she wasn't surprised to hear that her granddaughter had won $100,000 in a national contest that required following a series of clues to a buried treasure.
"She's smart -- very smart," said Alspaugh, who lives in Winston-Salem.
On Tuesday, Levi's, the jeans-maker based in San Francisco, announced that Alspaugh's granddaughter, Laura Eliza-beth Hall, 24, who lives in Dallas, had won the $100,000 prize in Go Forth Challenge.
The challenge connected thousands of contestants through Facebook, Twitter and other sites as they followed online and real-world clues in a national treasure hunt.
The challenge, which began Oct. 5, required players to solve a series of mysteries associated with the fictional character Grayson Ozias IV on his 1896 adventures across Ameri-ca.
As the story went, he buried his fortune before disappearing.
After Hall figured out the final clue, the company flew her to Virgin, Utah, to dig up a box containing $100,000.
"I'm thrilled for her," Alspaugh said.
Hall's grandfather, Thomas Alspaugh, also lives in Winston-Salem.
Her mother, Beth Al-spaugh Wilbins, graduated from West Forsyth High School and now lives in Dallas.
