ROARING GAP — Three people were killed Monday when their pickup collided with a truck on U.S. 21 in Roaring Gap, authorities said.
The victims are James Lee Perry, 40; his wife, Amy Mullis Perry, 34 and their son, Brandon Lee Perry, 11, said Trooper George Haydt of the N.C. Highway Patrol. They died at the scene.
James Perry was driving a pickup shortly before 5:30 p.m. when it crossed the center line on U.S. 21 and collided with a truck driven by Carroll Gene Howell, 39, of Sparta, Haydt said. Amy and Brandon were passengers in the pickup.
Howell was injured and treated at Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, Haydt said.
Perry's pickup was traveling at 45 mph when it hit the truck, which was traveling at 40 mph, Haydt said. The highway's speed limit where the crash occurred is 45 mph.
James and Amy were wearing seatbelts. Brandon, who was sitting in between them, was not wearing a seatbelt because the pickup didn't have a seatbelt for someone sitting in the middle of the front seat, Haydt said.
