Order hastens jobless benefits for ConAgra workers

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Gov. Bev Perdue has signed an executive order which will immediately extend eligibility for unemployment benefits to workers laid-off from a North Carolina plant where an explosion killed four people.

The order signed Tuesday waives the "waiting week" for unemployment benefits for the victims of a major industrial disaster.

The explosion at the ConAgra plant in Garner last June killed four workers and injured at least 40. Limited production resumed at the plant in July, but in September, company officials announced they were laying off around 300 workers.

Last week, ConAgra ended compensation for some of its employees.
