Boone police have charged a man in connection with the shooting death of Appalachian State University student on Sunday, authorities said.

Galen Elijah Ruble, 20, was charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter for the negligent shooting death of Jay Derby. Derby, 20, of Matthews died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Capt. Jim Wilson said Derby was shot and killed with a muzzle loader early Sunday morning.
Ruble is not a student at Appalachian State, Wilson said.

Ruble is free on $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 15.

It wasn't immediately known whether Ruble had an attorney, and a telephone listing for his family had been disconnected.

Police arrived at 148 Faculty Street, Apt. 6. about 12:30 a.m. Paramedics say Derby was dead when they arrived.

The complex, App South, is home to a large number of students.

Mike Derby says his son was studying business and planned to be home for Thanksgiving.
