An Appalachian State University student died after he was accidentally shot early yesterday in an apartment near campus, Boone police said.
Jay Franklin Derby, 19, of Matthews, was killed when someone inside the apartment fired a gun, WGHP/FOX8 reported.
The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. at the Appalachian South Apartments on Faculty Street, Boone police said. Officers, along with Watauga medics, arrived to find Derby fatally injured.
Seven people were inside the apartment when the shooting took place. Police are continuing to investigate and have not released the name of the person believed to have fired the gun, WGHP/FOX8 said.
