STATESVILLE -- A Winston-Salem man was killed Thursday night when his car struck a stopped pickup on Cool Springs Road, near its intersection with Old Mocksville Road, authorities said yesterday.

James Claytor, 93, of 635 Motor Road suffered extensive chest injuries and was pronounced dead at Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

Claytor was driving his car on Old Mocksville Road around 6:15 when he veered off the road and crossed the center line on Cools Spring Road, the highway patrol said.

Trooper Sean Davidson of the N.C. Highway Patrol said that Claytor's 1991 Honda Civic ran off Old Mocksville Road and hit a Chevrolet Silverado pickup that was stopped at a traffic light.

The pickup's driver had minor injuries.

Claytor was going 40 to 45 mph when the wreck occurred, and he was wearing his seatbelt, the highway patrol said.

Before the wreck, Claytor's daughter had reported him missing to the Winston-Salem Police Department, the highway patrol said.

Downtown post office still on list

The U.S. Postal Service said yesterday that Winston-Salem's downtown post office on Town Run Lane remains on the list of branches and retail stations that may be closed as the postal service looks for ways to save money.

Earlier this year, the postal service began looking at about 3,300 stations and branches, mainly in urban and suburban areas. Only 241 offices remain under review, the postal service said.

The postal service reported a loss of $3.8 billion at the end of its 2009 fiscal year in October.

GOP official wants Aiken checked

RALEIGH -- The head of the Wake County Republican Party wants election officials to check on Clay Aiken's registration after the singer made a political outburst.

Claude Pope filed a complaint Friday challenging whether the former American Idol runner-up can lawfully vote in the county.

Records show that Aiken voted last month using the address of his mother's home in Raleigh, where he once lived. He now has a house in nearby Chatham County. Aiken blogged last week that candidates who won Wake County's school- board elections are "selfish idiots" who may ruin the school system.

Pope said that the challenge isn't about Aiken's words but making sure that people are lawfully registered.

An Aiken publicist didn't return a phone call seeking comment.

Judicial appointments have backers

RALEIGH -- A poll says that North Carolina residents like electing their judges, but some are open to letting an independent commission appoint them.

The Elon University Poll released yesterday found that more than two-thirds of those polled say they support choosing their judges on a ballot, as they elect other officials.

Similar percentages of those surveyed opposed changing the law to let the governor appoint judges. But nearly half said they agreed with the idea of an independent panel appointing judges. The panel would not consist of the governor or members of the legislature.

Elon pollsters surveyed 563 North Carolina residents by phone Monday through Thursday. There's a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.

Eye doctor's conduct under review

RALEIGH -- An Asheville eye doctor could lose his medical license after a patient complained that he made cutting criticisms, including telling her that she was fat.

The N.C. Medical Board will decide if Dr. Earl Sunderhaus overstepped the bounds of professional decency.

Sunderhaus' patient complained that he poked her thigh and told her that she is fat, and also scolded her as irresponsible for being unemployed and relying on taxpayers to pay for another pregnancy.

Sunderhaus admitted that he told the patient that her thick thighs and diabetes could cause her to go blind.

He made his points again by writing to the patient, Gov. Bev Perdue and blasting the medical board.
