Q. My mother would like a hand-painted plastic cake carrier for Christmas. Is there anyone locally who does this kind of work? -- S.G.
A. SAM talked to two local women who say they can help you: Sandra Beeson of Sandra's Creations and Debra Grant of Nonpareil. Both do decorative painting.
Beeson has been recommended by the staff at South Fork Recreation Center, where she teaches one-stroke painting. She also teaches classes at A.C. Moore craft store.
Beeson is a member of the Winston-Salem Crafts Guild and the Kernersville Arts and Crafts Guild. You can e-mail Beeson at skinnynek@triad.rr.com, or call her at 595-4200.
Grant hand paints windows, bottles, and baskets, among other things. She also uses liquid lead and enamel or porcelain paint to create a stained-glass look on a variety of items.
"I paint everything," she said. Grant's phone number is 760-2768.
If you are looking for someone skilled in a particular craft, the Winston-Salem Crafts Guild is a good place to start. Guild members featured on the Web site www.winstonsalemcraftsguild.com create a wide variety of crafts including soaps, kaleidoscopes, jewelry, tinware and stained glass.
The Guild Holiday Shop in Reynolda Village will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 until 4 p.m. on Sundays through Dec. 23. The phone number is 829-6991.
