A 34-year-old woman was sentenced to more than eight years in prison after pleading guilty to killing her girlfriend's brother during a fight at a family dinner two years ago.

Latonya Harris of 411 Griffith Commons Drive pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Tuesday in the death of Steven Frazier Suber, 22.

Judge Patrice Hinnant of Forsyth Superior Court sentenced Harris to eight to 10 years in prison.

On Aug. 26, 2007, Suber was visiting his family at the home of his oldest sister, Omega Suber, for the family's weekly Sunday dinner.

Harris was dating Suber's sister, Neka Suber. Assistant District Attorney Belinda Foster said that Steven Suber was drunk and asked Harris for a ride.

Harris refused, and Harris and Suber started punching and pushing each other; family members tried to break up the fight.

Neka Suber got in the middle of the fight, and Steven Suber pushed her away, Foster said. That's when Harris started stabbing Steven Suber, , Foster said, hitting him several times including in the lung and in the heart.

Steven Suber stumbled into the house and collapsed in the kitchen. He was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he died.

In court Tuesday, Harris apologized to Suber's family, said David Freedman, her attorney. She also asked for the family's forgiveness, Freedman said.
