Q. Please list all of the free Wi-Fi locations in Forsyth and Yadkin Counties. -- J.W.
A. We can tell you about several places where you can go to open a Web page without opening your wallet, but the list is certainly not complete. Web sites such as www.openwifispots.com and www.wififreespot.com can help you find other Wi-Fi locations, free or otherwise.
Wi-Fi, short for wireless fidelity, lets you connect to the Internet without wires. Public access is not secure; so when using it, take steps to protect your personal information.
Libraries -- including all branches of the Forsyth County Public Library -- colleges, airports, hotels and coffee shops are common places to find public Web access. Each place has its own usage rules.
Some locations limit your time, and some require you to buy something. Others may charge a fee.
Last summer the Journal's Tim Clodfelter wrote about Winston-Salem's "Wi-Fi on Fourth," which runs along Fourth Street between Main and Poplar. The story mentioned some local Wi-Fi spots including Panera Bread, Brew Nerds, Downtown Thai, Rana Loca, Chelsee's Coffee Shop, Finnigan's Wake, Sands Coffee, Krankies, Hanes Mall and Thruway Shopping Center.
In Yadkin County, the four branches of the public library -- in Yadkinville, Boonville, East Bend and Jonesville -- offer free wireless service, Jamie Johnston of the Yadkin Chamber of Commerce says. "Some fast food restaurants have Wi-Fi, she said, "but they charge a fee per hour."
