Q. I have a large Fostoria glass punch bowl with a small crack that I would like to get repaired. Do you have any suggestions? -- B.D.
A. SAM did not know of any local companies that repair glassware, so we asked Gusten's Restoration Studio for help. Joe and Lenore Gusten restore porcelain, pottery and ceramics, and they referred us to Jon and Amy Oakley of Hayesville, N.C., who may be able to repair your punch bowl.
Most of the "crack" that you see in glassware is the air that gets in, Amy Oakley says. The Oakleys remove the air and seal the crack using a thin bonding agent, strengthening the damaged area and improving the appearance of the glass.
When treasured glassware cracks, the most important thing to remember is to keep it clean until it is repaired, Oakley said. "Dust and other particles can settle into a cracked area and inhibit our product from being able to completely run into the crack," she said.
Both the Gustens and the Oakleys will be at the Antiques Extravaganza at the Joel Coliseum. The show, which will be held in the Annex and Education Building, starts Friday, Nov. 27, and runs through Sunday, the 29th. The show is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $5 for one day or $6 for the weekend.
